Bodybuilding in the WWE and TNA wrestling organizations
As in any profession, there is pressure put on you to perform at the highest level or risk losing your job. This is especially true in wrestling entertainment such as the WWE and TNA wrestling organizations. Most of these athletes are of an amazing physique that has taken years to acquire. The people watching these events do not want to see average looking people wrestle around, so these wrestlers need to look huge and super strong. Most wrestlers understand that bodybuilding is a requirement of the job and must work out every day to maintain their amazing bodies.
Expectations for bodybuilding
The expectations for wrestlers are to look big, strong, and capable of crushing the averaged sized person. This takes hard work though, and often requires a workout every day of the week, in order to maintain their appearance. Strict training regimes are often required. The management of these companies expects their athletes to perform on the highest level and look the very best. There is a lot of pressure placed on the wrestlers to live up to the standards placed on them.
The importance of physical appearance
Since most wrestling seen on television is for entertainment, physical appearance is vital to being successful in the wrestling entertainment industry. Most people will not turn in if the wrestlers did not look good or were just of average build. Appearance is of even more importance for the female wrestlers, as most males want to look at the best looking girls, not just big and strong women. Even if a person is big and strong, they still must look good or people might not like them.
Importance of strength & speed
Since this sport is performed at a very fast and powerful level, wrestlers must have the strength and power need to pull off the moves and stunts that are required of them. Their bodybuilding and workout programs should train them for strength and speed, in order to help them perform at the best of their abilities. Also, if they cannot do all the required moves, injuries could occur and someone could get seriously hurt. Many moves consist of guys being thrown in the air and picked up well above someone’s head, creating a huge risk for injury. Other times guys will jump off the top ropes and land on the other person. It takes perfect timing to execute moves like this and the only way to do so is being in excellent shape.
The use of steroids & other drugs
With all the pressure put on wrestlers, sometimes they resort to cheating and cutting corners in order to get ahead in their bodybuilding. Steroids are a huge problem in this industry as guys have died from steroid related compilations such as heart attacks and strokes. They also alter the ways of thinking and can cause mental problems in some individuals as well. The WWE is currently taking a strong stand against steroids and is educating its wrestlers on them.
Another problem is the use of painkillers. These wrestlers are on the road for many days of the year with little time to heal between matches. After a while, they could not perform unless they do something about it. Taking painkillers may be the only choice for some and they can then perform. However, they fail to realize how easy it is to become addicted and fall into a trap. The cycle never ends and eventually their health will suffer.
Everyone thinks wrestlers have all the fame and glory, but that is not the case as you can see all the hard work that goes into being a great performer. Often, these athletes have a short career and many have some kind lasting injury. The rise to the top can be fast, but if they do not watch it, so can the fall.
